Go Ape – Thetford Forest

Go Ape is a high-ropes experience designed to get you off the forest floor and into the canopy for a bird’s-eye view of the woodlands.

What to Expect

Visitors can expect a mix of physical challenge and adrenaline. You will navigate through the trees using rope bridges, ভারসাম্য beams, and intricate crossings, culminating in long, exhilarating zip wires back to the ground. There are different levels of courses, ranging from lower, simpler loops for beginners to high-intensity platforms for those seeking a serious thrill.

Duration and Suitability

Most visitors spend between 2 to 3 hours completing a course.

  • Best Suited For: Active families, groups of friends, and thrill-seekers. It is a fantastic venue for building confidence in children and testing the nerves of adults.
  • Who Might Be Bored: Those who prefer sedentary activities or have a severe phobia of heights. If you aren’t keen on physical exertion or being outdoors, you may find the safety briefings and slow progression through obstacles tedious.
  • Groups: It is particularly popular for hen and stag parties, team-building days, and teenage birthday parties because of the shared sense of achievement.

Best Time to Visit

To avoid the crowds, early morning slots are usually the quietest and most peaceful. If you prefer a vibrant atmosphere, weekend afternoons are buzzing. Since it is an outdoor activity, a dry, overcast day is often better than a scorching hot one, as the physical effort can be taxing in direct sun. The forest provides good natural shelter from light rain, so don’t let a drizzle stop you.

Unique Features

What makes the Suffolk location special is its setting in High Lodge within Thetford Forest. Unlike some urban climbing parks, this is a deep-forest experience where you are surrounded by giant pines and diverse wildlife. It feels truly immersive in nature.

Budget and Memberships

  • Savings: Booking in advance often secures a better rate than turning up on the day.
  • Discounts: Keep an eye out for Blue Light Card discounts or military rates if you belong to those professions.
  • Memberships & Loyalty: If you live locally, look into High Lodge parking passes or Forestry England memberships; while they may not discount the Go Ape ticket itself, they can significantly reduce the cost of frequent parking and provide perks for other forest activities. Some national loyalty schemes and “days out” vouchers from supermarkets are occasionally accepted, so check your points balance before booking.

Helpful Advice

  • Clothing: Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear with good grip. Avoid loose clothing or dangling jewellery. Gloves are highly recommended to protect your hands from the ropes.
  • Food: There is a cafe on-site, but it can be pricey. Bringing a picnic is a great way to save money and enjoy the forest surroundings.
  • Height/Age: Courses have specific height requirements (usually around 1.2m for junior courses and 1.4m for the main challenge). Always check these against your group’s heights before travelling.
  • Parking: Parking is available on-site at High Lodge, but it is a pay-on-exit system.

Nearby Attractions

Since Go Ape is located within the High Lodge Forest Centre, you can easily turn your climb into a full day out. Nearby, you’ll find:

  • Walking and Cycling Trails: Miles of marked paths.
  • Adventure Playgrounds: Great for younger kids who aren’t old enough for the ropes.
  • The Gruffalo Discovery Land: A hit for families with toddlers.
  • Dog-Friendly Areas: Making it a great spot if you’ve brought a furry friend along to wait on the ground.
