St George’s Hall is located right in the heart of Liverpool, Merseyside, directly across from Lime Street Station. It is a massive, neo-classical landmark that’s hard to miss.
To be honest, this is an “interesting” spot rather than an “action-packed” one. It’s the kind of place you visit to marvel at the architecture or soak up some history. If you just want to say you’ve seen one of the finest neo-classical buildings in the world, a quick 30-minute wander around the outside and the main hall will do. However, if you dive into the organized tours, you’ll likely spend 90 minutes to 2 hours here.
What to expect:
The building is split between grand, beautiful spaces and dark, gritty history. You can explore the Great Hall with its famous Minton tiled floor (though the tiles are usually covered to protect them, so seeing them is a rare treat). For something more immersive, the basement galleries and prison cells are fascinating. You can walk from the dock in the old courtroom straight down to the dark cells where prisoners were held, which is a bit of a thrill.
