Cornish Seal Sanctuary

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a charity-run rescue and rehabilitation centre dedicated to the safety and well-being of seals around the Cornish coastline. For nearly 50 years, it has served as a lifeline for sick, injured, or distressed marine animals, primarily focusing on the rescue, rehab, and eventual release of grey seal pups.

Location & Getting There
Address: Gweek, Helston, Cornwall, TR12 6UG.
Setting: Situated in 40 acres of picturesque countryside with panoramic views of the Helford River.
Travel: Arriving by car is recommended; from Helston, follow signs for R.N.A.S. Culdrose (A3083) and then follow the signposts to Gweek village. Buses also run regularly from Falmouth and Helston.

Things to Do & Enjoy
Meet the Residents: See resident grey and common seals, as well as sea lions, otters, and the only rescue puffins in the UK.
Working Seal Hospital: Go behind the scenes to see how staff care for rescued pups before they are released back into the wild.
Educational Talks: Attend daily feeding sessions and talks where staff share the individual stories of the animals.
Woodland & Nature Trails: Explore the Squirrel Scramble Trail or woodland walks featuring beavers, goats, and rare breed sheep.
Family Fun: Children can enjoy a pirate-themed playground and an interactive rockpool experience.
Relaxation: The Helford View Café offers Cornish pasties and cream teas with scenic river views.

Who Should Go & When
Who: It is ideal for families, nature enthusiasts, and animal lovers. It is particularly rewarding for primary school children and teenagers interested in marine conservation.
When:
Pup Season (September – March): The best time to see the hospital full of rescued pups.
Spring/Summer: Best for enjoying the woodland walks, bluebells (in May), and outdoor picnic spots.

What Makes it Unique
Only Rescue Centre in Cornwall: It is the only fully operational seal rescue centre in the county.
Puffin Island: It is the only place in the UK where you can see rescued Icelandic puffins up close.
Conservation Focus: Unlike a traditional zoo, the primary goal is rehabilitation and release, making every visit a contribution to vital conservation work.
