Beer Quarry Caves

Beer Quarry Caves is a massive, 2,000-year-old man-made underground complex in East Devon, created by centuries of quarrying the famous Beer Stone. This site provided the primary material for some of Britain’s most iconic landmarks, including Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and Windsor Castle.

Location & Access
Where: It is located about one mile west of the village of Beer, Devon (Postcode: EX12 3AS or EX12 3AT).
Getting There: You can reach it by road via the A3052 (follow the brown and white tourist signs), or by a steep but scenic walk from Branscombe or the South West Coast Path.

What to See & Do
Guided Tours: Take a ~60–90 minute expert-led tour through the “underground cathedral”.
Historical Insights: Learn about Roman, Norman, and Medieval quarrying techniques and the harsh 14-hour days workers spent under candlelight.
Museum & Exhibits: View ancient documents, stone carvings, and specialist tools used throughout history.
Special Events: The caves now offer unique settings for celebrant-led weddings and vow renewals.

Who Should Visit & When
Best For: History buffs, geology enthusiasts, and families with “little diggers” (recommended for children ages 5+).
Opening Times: Generally open daily from late March to late October (10:00 am to 3:30/4:00 pm).
Winter Status: The caves are closed to visitors in winter as they serve as a protected hibernation site for several rare bat species, including the Bechstein’s bat.

What Makes It Unique
The Stone: Beer Stone is a “freestone” that can be carved in any direction when fresh but hardens like rock upon exposure to air.
Historical Layers: You can physically see the transition between different eras, from Roman arches to Medieval vaulted roofs.
Secret History: Beyond quarrying, the caves served as a secret Catholic chapel during the Reformation and a hiding place for smugglers’ contraband.
