Castle Drogo

Castle Drogo is a 20th-century country house built to look like a medieval granite fortress. It is famously the last castle ever built in England, constructed between 1911 and 1930 for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe.

Location
The castle is perched high above the Teign Gorge on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, near the village of Drewsteignton.

What to See and Do
The Castle Interior: Explore a “modern” castle that combines medieval aesthetics (like a working portcullis) with early 20th-century luxuries such as electricity and lifts. Highlights include the 1920s kitchen with 374 copper jelly moulds and the Drawing Room featuring Venetian chandeliers.
The Gardens: Visit the highest garden cared for by the National Trust. It features formal terraces, a sunken rose garden, and a circular lawn for croquet.
Teign Gorge Walks: Take the “Hunters Path” for dramatic views of the gorge or walk down to the Hydro Turbine, which still generates electricity for the site today.
Family Activities: Children can play in the Bunty House (a miniature 1930s playhouse) or follow the “pets of Castle Drogo” indoor trail.

Who and When to Visit
Best for: History buffs, architecture fans of Sir Edwin Lutyens, families, and hikers.
Best Time:
Spring: For blooming magnolias, rhododendrons, and wisteria.
Autumn: For vibrant foliage in the Teign Gorge.
Avoiding Crowds: Weekdays or October are typically quieter than peak summer months.
Opening Times: The castle typically opens from 10:30–16:30, while the garden and café open earlier at 10:00.

Why It’s Unique
Unlike ancient ruins, Castle Drogo is a “modern-medieval oddity”. It was built using massive granite blocks (some 6 feet thick) but was designed by one of Britain’s greatest modern architects, Edwin Lutyens, who was simultaneously designing New Delhi. It also gained notoriety for its persistent leaking flat roof, the subject of a massive nine-year restoration project completed in 2021.
