Abbotsbury Swannery

Abbotsbury Swannery is a world-unique wildlife sanctuary located on the dramatic Dorset Coast at the western end of the Chesil and Fleet Nature Reserve. It is the only place in the world where you can walk through the heart of a managed colony of nesting Mute Swans.

Location and Accessibility
Where: Situated near the village of Abbotsbury, roughly 9 miles from Weymouth.
Transport: Accessible via the Jurassic Coaster bus (X53 service) which stops in the village.
Accessibility: The site is fully wheelchair accessible with flat gravel paths, though it is about a 5-10 minute walk from the entrance to the main swan area. Two wheelchairs are available for free use.

What to Do & How Long to Stay
Visitors typically spend 2 to 4 hours (a half-day) exploring the 25-acre site.
Hand-Feeding: Participate in mass feeding sessions at 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm daily, accompanied by an informative talk from the swanherd.
Cygnet Watching: Walk directly past active nests (often just inches from the path) to see hatching eggs and young cygnets.
Family Fun: Explore the world’s largest willow maze (shaped like a giant swan), a Brambly Hedge interactive story trail, pedal go-karts, and a play area.
History: Visit the Swanherd’s Hut, History Room, and the remains of the 11th-century Benedictine monastery established by monks who originally farmed the swans.

Best Times to Go
Cygnet Season (Late May – June): This is the peak time to witness hundreds of fluffy grey cygnets hatching.
Moult Season (June – July): The population doubles as non-breeding swans seek sanctuary while flightless.
Flying Practice (Sept – Oct): Watch young swans learning to fly before the site closes for winter.
Opening Times: Open daily from mid-March to the end of October, typically 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Who It’s Best Suited For
Families: Highly engaging for children due to the feeding, maze, and play areas.
Nature Lovers & Photographers: Offers rare, up-close wildlife encounters and scenic views over the Fleet Lagoon.
History Enthusiasts: Fascinating for those interested in monastic history and traditional Dorset heritage.
Note: No dogs are allowed (including assistance dogs) to avoid agitating the swans.
