Barrington Court is an atmospheric Tudor manor house and estate. Located in the hamlet of Barrington, near Ilminster in South Somerset, it is a National Trust property known for its striking honey-coloured Ham stone architecture and beautifully restored gardens.
What to Do
Explore the House: Walk through the ground floor of Strode House to learn about the estate’s history. Note: The main Court House is currently closed for major conservation work.
Wander the Gardens: Visit the formal walled gardens, including the Lily Garden, White Garden, and the Rose and Iris Garden, all influenced by famous garden designer Gertrude Jekyll.
Visit the Orchards: Stroll through the cider apple orchards, which are particularly beautiful during spring blossom and autumn harvest.
Shop Artisan Crafts: Browse the Barrington Pottery and other independent artisanal businesses on the Avenue, including a wood carver and goldsmith.
Relax at Beagles Café: Enjoy a range of light bites, cakes, and hot drinks in the old beagle sheds.
Visiting Information
Typical Duration: Most visitors spend between 1 to 3 hours. Garden enthusiasts and families may stay for a full afternoon if they include a picnic and estate walk.
Best Suited To: Garden lovers, history buffs, and families seeking a quieter, less crowded day out. It is also highly dog-friendly (dogs on leads).
Best Times to Go:
Spring (March–May): For the tulip displays and apple blossoms.
Summer: When the wildflower meadows and formal gardens are in full bloom.
Weekdays: For a more peaceful experience away from school holiday crowds.

Unique Features
Unlike many stately homes, the Court House is completely unfurnished. It is presented as an “empty house” to highlight its architectural salvage—such as elaborate fireplaces and panelling—and to allow visitors to focus on the play of light and historical atmosphere without the distraction of collections.
