Larmer Tree Gardens

Larmer Tree Gardens is an 11-acre Grade II* listed Victorian “pleasure ground” created in 1880 by General Pitt Rivers. It was the first privately owned garden in the UK to be opened for public enjoyment and remains a unique example of Victorian extravagance.

Location & Logistics
Where it is: Located on the Wiltshire/Dorset border in Tollard Royal, near Salisbury and Shaftesbury.
Typical Visit Duration: Visitors typically spend 2 to 4 hours exploring the grounds, though this can extend if you enjoy a long picnic.
Opening Times: The gardens are generally open Sunday to Wednesday (10am–4pm) from April to October.
Important: They are typically closed Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for weddings and private events. Always check the Official Calendar for occasional closures.

What to Do & Experience
Explore Ornate Buildings: Discover unique structures like the Roman Temple, Indian Pavilions with Nepalese carvings, and the Singing Theatre.
Wildlife Spotting: Famous for its free-roaming peacocks and a pair of macaws that inhabit the grounds.
Picnicking & Games: Picnics are highly encouraged; the gardens provide free deckchairs and croquet equipment.
Fairy Door Trail: Families with children can collect a free copy of the Fairy Door Trail at the entrance gate.
Sunday Music: On Sunday afternoons, you can often enjoy free music on the lawn.

Best Suited For & Best Times to Go
Best Suited For: Families, couples looking for a romantic escape, and anyone interested in Victorian history, horticulture, or a “quintessential English” experience.
Best Times to Go:
Spring: For camellias, rhododendrons, and woodland blossoms.
Summer: To see the extensive hydrangea collection and Eucryphias in bloom.

Group Discounts: Groups of 15 or more can benefit from a concessionary entrance fee (historically around £3.00 pp; check current rates on the Visit Wiltshire page).
Booking Tips: Tickets can be cheaper when purchased in advance through platforms like Lovetovisit.
Accessibility: Most of the garden is wheelchair accessible via gravel paths, with the exception of the “Dell” area.
No Dogs Allowed: Due to the free-roaming ornamental birds, dogs are not permitted (except assistance dogs).
