Stonehenge

Stonehenge is the most architecturally sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage site consisting of massive standing stones arranged in a unique circular formation. It was constructed in several phases between 3000 BC and 1500 BC, using both local Sarsen sandstones and smaller “bluestones” transported from over 150 miles away in Wales.

Location & Getting There
Where it is: It is located on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, about 2.5 miles west of the town of Amesbury and 8 miles north of Salisbury.
Travel: From London, it is approximately an 80-mile (2-hour) drive. Many visitors take a train to Salisbury and then use the Stonehenge Tour bus which runs directly from the station to the site.

What to Do & Duration
The Stone Circle: Most visitors walk the perimeter path to view the stones; general admission does not allow you to go inside the circle to touch them.
Visitor Centre & Exhibition: Explore over 250 archaeological treasures, including jewellery and ancient human remains, and experience a 360-degree virtual solstice simulation.
Neolithic Houses: Step inside reconstructed 4,500-year-old dwellings and watch volunteers demonstrate ancient crafts.
Wider Landscape: Use the National Trust walking tracks to see burial mounds (barrows) and the “Avenue” ceremonial route.
Typical Stay: Plan for 2 to 3 hours at the site itself. If travelling from London, set aside at least half a day.

Best Suited To & Best Times to Go
Best Suited To: History enthusiasts, families with curious children (there are “stone-pulling” exhibits), and those seeking a spiritual or reflective experience.
Best Times to Visit:
Day: Arrive before 11:00 am or after 4:00 pm to avoid the peak crowds from tour buses.
Season: Spring (March–June) and Autumn (September–November) offer a balance of manageable crowds and pleasant weather.
Unique Experiences: The Stone Circle Experience offers exclusive access inside the stones for small groups outside normal hours.
