Coldharbour Mill is a 200-year-old working wool museum and one of the oldest woollen mills in the UK, having been in continuous production since 1797. Located in the tranquil village of Uffculme, Devon (EX15 3EE), it is just a five-minute drive from Junction 27 of the M5.
What to See and Do
Witness Living History: Watch period machinery in action, including spinning mules and power looms, as they transform raw fleece into high-quality worsted yarn and textiles.

Nature & Relaxation: Stroll through 10 acres of wetland and wildlife meadows, or visit the Grist Mill Café Bar for Devon cream tea by the waterside.

Who Should Go and When
Ideal For: Families, history enthusiasts, textile crafters, and school groups. It is highly accessible, with lifts to all exhibit floors.
When to Visit: The museum is generally open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am – 4 pm.
Pro Tip: Check the events calendar to time your visit with a Steam Day or a Production Day to see the machinery in full operation.
What Makes it Unique
Unlike static museums, Coldharbour Mill is a living factory. It still produces commercial goods—such as knitting yarns, rugs, and registered tartans—using the same traditional methods and heritage machinery that fueled the Industrial Revolution in the South West. It also tells the unique social history of the Fox family, Quaker employers who were pioneers in social reform and workers’ welfare.
