Corfe Castle – Dorset

Corfe Castle is a thousand-year-old royal fortress and palace in Dorset, now preserved as a majestic ruin by the National Trust. Built originally by William the Conqueror’s son, King Henry I, it stands as one of Britain’s most iconic survivors of the English Civil War.

Location & Access
Where it is: The castle is perched on a 55m-high hill in the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, guarding a natural gap in the Purbeck Hills.
Getting There: It is accessible by car (A351), public transport (Purbeck Breezer bus), or the historic Swanage Railway steam train, which lets you alight directly in the village.

Visitor Experience
What to Do: You can climb through the ruins to see “murder holes” and arrow loops, enjoy panoramic views of the Purbeck countryside, and explore the 18th-century tea room and shop in the village.
Duration: A typical visit to the castle ruins takes 90 minutes to 2 hours, though you can easily spend half a day if you also explore the model village and local shops.
Best Suited To: Families, history enthusiasts, and photographers. Note that the site has steep slopes and uneven paths that may be challenging for those with mobility issues.

Best Times to Visit
Peak Seasons: Summer (July–August) and bank holidays are the busiest.
Quiet Times: June or September offer warmer weather with fewer crowds.
Atmosphere: Autumn mornings are ideal for photographers hoping to capture the castle “floating” above low mist. In winter, the castle is often lit with braziers during the Christmas holidays.

What Makes it Unique
Corfe Castle is famous for its “crazy angles”—the result of 17th-century Parliamentarian sappers using gunpowder to demolish the walls, leaving behind massive, tilted stone fragments that still stand today. It was also the inspiration for Enid Blyton’s Kirrin Island in the Famous Five series.
