Highcliffe Castle is a magnificent Grade I listed mansion built in the Romantic Gothic Revival style. It is widely considered the most important surviving house of its kind, famously featuring salvaged medieval stonework and stained glass from French monasteries.
Essential Visitor Information
Location: Situated on a clifftop in Highcliffe, Dorset (BH23 4LE), overlooking Christchurch Bay with views of the Isle of Wight and The Needles.
Typical Stay: Visitors generally spend 1–2 hours exploring the house itself, or 2–3 hours if including a guided tour or a walk through the grounds and beach.
Best Suited For: History enthusiasts, families (thanks to indoor trails and dressing-up areas), and nature lovers who enjoy scenic coastal walks.
Best Times to Go: The castle is typically open Sunday to Thursday, 10 am–4 pm. Summer is ideal for outdoor theatre and picnics on the lawn, while Spring offers a quieter experience with beautiful garden blooms.

What Makes it Unique?
Unlike many stately homes, Highcliffe Castle is a “Phoenix rising from the ashes”. Two devastating fires in the 1960s left it a derelict ruin for 20 years. Its interior today is a fascinating blend of modern restoration and exposed historic “shells”. It also has a unique celebrity link: Harry Gordon Selfridge, founder of the department store, lived here and is buried in the churchyard directly across the road.

Nature & Beach: Use the direct zigzag path or steps down to Highcliffe Beach or walk through the adjacent Steamer Point Nature Reserve.
