Yorkshire Wildlife Centre

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is a fantastic day out located in Branton, Doncaster (DN4 6TB) in South Yorkshire. Unlike a traditional zoo, this place is designed around massive walk-through enclosures, meaning you get a much more immersive experience with the animals.

What’s the vibe?
It is widely considered one of the best attractions in the region because of how close you can get to the animals. The standout stars are definitely the Polar Bears—it’s one of the few places in the UK where you can see them, and their “Project Polar” reserve is huge. You’ll also find majestic lions, tigers, and cheeky lemurs that you can actually walk amongst in their own wooded area.

Top things to do and see:

  • The Big Five: Make a beeline for the lions, tigers, leopards, and polar bears. The elevated walkways give you a great view without being stuck behind thick bars.
  • Lemur Woods & Wallaby Walkabout: These are brilliant for kids and adults alike. You walk right through their habitat, and if you’re lucky, a lemur might sunbathe right next to you on the fence!
  • Adventure Play: If the kids need to burn off steam, there are massive indoor and outdoor play areas. The Monkey Play Barn is a lifesaver if the weather turns.
  • Evolution: This is a themed dining experience nearby that feels like a trip through a prehistoric world—great for a bit of extra “wow” factor.

Insider tips for a better day:

  • Budgeting & Food: Food on-site can be a bit pricey and queues get long during school holidays. Many regular visitors recommend bringing a picnic; there are plenty of outdoor benches and it saves a fair bit of money.
  • Parking: There is plenty of free parking on-site, so no need to worry about hunting for a space in the village.
  • Timing: Most people spend a full day here (around 4 to 6 hours). It’s a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must!
  • Deals: It is definitely worth checking for online booking discounts before you arrive. If you live nearby, the annual membership is a “no-brainer” as it usually pays for itself in just a few visits and often gets you discounts in the gift shops and cafes.
  • Blue Light & Seniors: They usually offer discounted rates for Blue Light cardholders and seniors, so keep your ID handy.

Nearby Gems:
Right next door is the Yorkshire Hive, a free-to-enter boutique shopping and dining area. It’s perfect for a wander after the park closes to grab a coffee or a unique gift. If you have any energy left, the Potteric Carr Nature Reserve is just a short drive away for a more peaceful, low-key walk.
