Crownhill Fort

Crownhill Fort is the best-preserved example of a “Palmerston Fort” in Britain, originally built in the 1860s to protect Plymouth’s Royal Dockyard from a potential French land invasion. Today, it is managed by the Landmark Trust and serves as a unique historic site, holiday destination, and home to a community of small businesses.

Setting: It occupies one of the highest points in Plymouth, offering panoramic views toward Dartmoor and the sea.

What Makes it Unique
Unlike most Victorian forts that fell into ruin or were heavily altered, Crownhill Fort was used by the military until 1985. This continuous use helped preserve its original structure, including its heptagonal shape and six three-storey caponiers, making it a “time capsule” of 19th-century military engineering.
