Exeter Cathedral

Exeter Cathedral, officially the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, is a 900-year-old Anglican masterpiece and the top visitor attraction in Exeter. It is widely celebrated as one of the finest examples of Decorated Gothic architecture in Europe.

Location & Setting
The cathedral is located in the heart of Exeter, Devon, situated on 1, The Cloisters. It dominates the city’s Cathedral Green, a historic open space popular with both locals and tourists.

What to See & Do
The Vaulted Ceiling: Look up to see the longest uninterrupted medieval stone vaulted ceiling in the world, stretching approximately 96 metres.
Astronomical Clock: View the 15th-century clock, which features a 24-hour dial and shows the phases of the moon. It is also famously linked to the nursery rhyme “Hickory Dickory Dock”.
Bishop’s Throne: Standing at 18 metres tall, this early 14th-century masterpiece is considered one of the greatest pieces of medieval woodwork in Europe.
Guided Tours: Take a “Ground Floor” or “Onwards and Upwards” roof tour to explore hidden spaces and spiral staircases.
The Library & Archives: Home to the Exeter Book, a 10th-century Anglo-Saxon manuscript of fundamental importance to English literature.

Unique Features
The “Cat Flap”: A small round hole in the door below the astronomical clock, cut in the early 17th century to let the bishop’s cat hunt vermin.
Minstrels’ Gallery: A unique 14th-century balcony decorated with 12 carved angels playing medieval musical instruments.
Norman Towers: Unlike most cathedrals with a central tower, Exeter retains two massive 12th-century Norman towers as transepts.
