Totnes Castle is a remarkably well-preserved Norman motte-and-bailey castle located at the highest point of the historic town of Totnes in Devon. It was originally built shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1066 to demonstrate authority over the Saxon population.
Where It Is
Address: Castle Street, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 5NU.
Location Detail: It stands high above the town, overlooking the River Dart and providing views as far as Dartmoor.
Getting There: The castle is a short walk (approx. 1/4 mile) from Totnes Station.
What You Can Do and See
Climb the Keep: Take the 70 steep steps up the unusually high motte to reach the 14th-century stone shell-keep.
Walk the Battlements: Experience a 360-degree wall walk around the top of the keep, where you can see 34 “merlons” (the solid parts of the battlements) and defensive arrow slits.
Explore the Grounds: Relax in the peaceful inner bailey, explore the steep-sided ditch (moat walk), and see a 150-year-old Holm Oak tree.
Find History’s Marks: Look for graffiti carved into the bailey trees by WWII prisoners of war.

Who Should Go and When
Who: It is ideal for families (plenty of space for kids to run), history enthusiasts, and anyone looking for scenic photography.
Note: It is not fully accessible; while the bailey is wheelchair accessible, the keep requires climbing 70 uneven stone steps.
When: The best time to visit is during the summer months for picnics.
Opening Hours: Generally open daily from 1 April to 31 October (10 am – 5 pm) and on weekends only during the winter.
What Makes It Unique
Preservation: It is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle in England.
Peaceful History: Unlike many fortresses, Totnes Castle has no record of ever being besieged or involved in military action, serving instead as an administrative seat.
Town Integration: The castle’s construction physically disrupted the existing Saxon town plan, a rare and visible proof of Norman imposition.
