Snow Centres in the UK

You don’t need to travel to the Alps to experience proper skiing and snowboarding. The UK has a brilliant collection of indoor real-snow centres where you can ski, snowboard, take lessons, try snow tubing and enjoy winter sports activities all year round — whatever the weather outside.

Whether you’re a complete beginner wanting to try skiing for the first time, an experienced skier keeping sharp between ski holidays, a family looking for something completely different or a teenager who wants to learn to snowboard — UK snow centres are a genuinely brilliant option.

Always check the centre’s website for current session times, lesson availability, age requirements and what to wear before you visit.

Scotland — Outdoor Mountain Snowsports

Scottish Mountain Ski Centres

Scotland has five mountain ski centres offering the only real outdoor skiing in the UK. When conditions are right — usually between December and April — skiing and snowboarding on genuine Scottish mountains is a fantastic and often underrated experience. The five centres are Cairngorm Mountain, Glenshee, Glencoe Mountain, The Lecht and Nevis Range near Ben Nevis. All offer ski hire, lessons and facilities, and the surrounding Highland scenery is spectacular.

Tips for Your Snow Centre Visit

Book lessons in advance — ski and snowboard lessons at UK snow centres are very popular and can sell out weeks ahead, especially at weekends and during school holidays. If you want a lesson, book early.

What to wear — wear warm, flexible clothing you can move in. Most snow centres provide ski jackets and trousers to hire if you don’t have your own. Gloves are essential. Leave the jeans at home — they get very cold and wet when you fall!

Helmet hire — always worth hiring a helmet, especially for children and beginners. Most snow centres offer them at reasonable prices.

Allow more time than you think — getting kitted out, the safety briefing and getting used to the boots takes time before you even reach the slope. Allow at least half an hour before your session starts.

Try snow tubing if skiing isn’t your thing — most UK snow centres offer snow tubing alongside skiing. You sit in a rubber ring and slide down a dedicated slope — brilliant fun for all ages and no skill required at all.
