Durdle Door

Durdle Door is a world-famous natural limestone arch located on the Lulworth Estate along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was formed roughly 10,000 years ago when the sea pierced through the hard Portland limestone to create the iconic “doorway” shape.

Essential Visitor Information
Location: Situated near the village of West Lulworth (postcode BH20 5PU for the car park).
What to Do:
Sightseeing: View the arch from the cliff-top path or descend 143 steep steps to the shingle beach.
Outdoor Activities: Hiking along the South West Coast Path, swimming (at your own risk; no lifeguards), snorkeling, or visiting nearby Man O’War Beach.
Photography: Capturing the sun peaking through the arch, especially during winter solstices.
Duration: Most visitors spend 2–4 hours exploring the beach and nearby viewpoints.
Suitability: Best suited for active travelers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts. It is not recommended for those with mobility issues or pushchairs due to the steep, uneven paths and many steps.
When to Go
Best Time: Late spring to early autumn (May–September) offers the best weather for swimming and walking.
Avoiding Crowds: Visit in the early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon. Winter (December–February) is serene and dramatic but can be slippery.
Unique Feature: Unlike many man-made landmarks, Durdle Door is “unpolished” and raw, offering a direct encounter with 185 million years of geological history.
