Chesil Beach is an 18-mile-long (29km) shingle barrier beach on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, Southern England. Stretching from Portland in the east to West Bay in the west, it is separated from the mainland for much of its length by the Fleet Lagoon.
What You Can Do:
Wildlife & Nature: Visit the Wild Chesil Centre for interactive displays, birdwatching, and nature walks.
Walking: Walk along the shore or the South West Coast Path. Note that walking on the pebbles is physically demanding, similar to walking in deep snow.
Fishing: It is one of the UK’s premier beach fishing spots, especially for mackerel in the summer.
Sightseeing: Take in panoramic views from Portland Heights or the Jurassic Coast Road.
Boat Trips: During spring and summer, you can take the Fleet Explorer boat to see the lagoon.
Typical Duration:
Short Visit: 1–2 hours for a walk, coffee at the visitor centre, and photography.
Serious Walkers: 5–6 hours to hike significant sections of the 18-mile stretch.
Best Suited To: Nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, anglers, and photographers. It is not recommended for swimming due to a strong undertow and steeply shelving shoreline, except at West Bay where lifeguards may be present in summer.

What Makes It Unique
Geological Wonder: It is a “tombolo” or barrier beach that trapped the Fleet Lagoon behind it.
Pebble Grading: The stones are naturally graded by size; they are as large as potatoes near Portland and as small as peas near West Bay. Legend says local fishermen could tell where they had landed in the dark just by feeling the pebbles.
Acoustics: Even a gentle swell creates an “enormous roar” as the waves move the millions of pebbles.
Best Times to Go
Sunsets: The beach is famous for its incredible sunsets over the Atlantic.
Seasons:
Summer (July–August): Best for boat trips and fishing, though it is busier.
Winter/Off-Peak: Ideal for a “wild” and peaceful experience, though weather can be harsh.
Note: Certain areas are restricted from May to August to protect nesting birds.
