The Swindon & Cricklade Railway (S&CR) is Wiltshire’s only standard-gauge heritage railway. Operated entirely by passionate volunteers, it offers a nostalgic journey through the countryside on a restored section of the former Midland & South Western Junction Railway.
Where It Is
The railway is located between Swindon and Cricklade.
Blunsdon Station (SN25 2DA): The main visitor centre and headquarters with free parking.
Taw Valley Halt: Accessible from Mouldon Hill Country Park in North Swindon, which also offers free parking and public transport links via local buses.
Hayes Knoll: Features the locomotive shed and restoration centre (no road access; reachable only by train).
What You Can Do
Train Rides: Experience approximately 4.5-mile round trips on vintage steam or diesel-hauled trains.
Museums: Visit the Wartime Museum at Blunsdon (housed in an ex-LNER box van) or browse railway memorabilia in the main museum.
Restoration Viewing: See ongoing projects in the engine sheds at Hayes Knoll.
Dining & Shopping: Eat at the Whistle Stop Cafe, housed in two converted Norwegian carriages, or visit the souvenir shop.
Typical Visit Duration & Best Suited For
Duration: Most visitors spend approximately 2 hours, though some stay for a “full day” to enjoy multiple rides and the cafe.
Suited To: It is ideal for families with young children due to the manageable journey length. It also appeals to railway enthusiasts, history buffs, and seniors looking for a nostalgic trip.
Best Times to Go: Standard running days are Saturdays and Sundays (approx. 10:30 am – 4:00 pm). Summer Wednesdays often have additional services. Sunny days are recommended for the views, but special events like the Santa Specials or Halloween runs are high-demand festive times.
What Makes It Unique
Total Reconstruction: Unlike many heritage lines that inherited tracks, the S&CR was built by volunteers from an entirely empty trackbed starting in 1978.
Wiltshire’s Only Standard Gauge: It is the only place in the county to experience standard-gauge steam travel.
Vintage Train Project: The railway is uniquely focused on restoring carriages from over 100 years ago to recreate “living history” from the pre-British Railways era.
Benefits & Membership Tips
Ride-All-Day: Standard tickets typically allow you to ride the train as many times as you like on the day of your visit.
