Carew Castle and Tidal Mill

Carew Castle is one of the most attractive historic sites in Pembrokeshire because the setting is just as memorable as the building itself.

The castle rises beside a huge millpond, while a short walk takes you to the restored Tidal Mill, giving you two very different pieces of Welsh history in one visit.

Walk Around the Millpond

The millpond is one of the best parts of the setting and is worth exploring even if you are mainly here for the castle.

A walk around the water gives you excellent views back towards the castle and plenty of opportunities to spot birds and other wildlife.

It also leads naturally towards the Tidal Mill, so the walk connects the two main attractions rather than feeling like an extra detour.

Visit the Tidal Mill

Carew Tidal Mill is one of the most unusual historic buildings in the area.

The three-storey mill used the rise and fall of the tide to power its machinery, with water stored behind the causeway and released through waterwheels as the tide dropped.

Inside, you can see the old machinery and displays explaining how this clever system turned grain into flour without relying on a normal river or stream.

Bring the Family

Carew runs a busy programme of events through the year, including medieval activities, living history, archery, talks and seasonal family days.

The castle itself is also easy for children to enjoy because there are towers, open spaces and plenty to explore rather than one long indoor route.

During major events the site can be much busier, so check what is on before deciding whether you want a quiet visit or a livelier day.

Stop for Food

Nest Tearoom sits close to the castle and gives you somewhere convenient for drinks, cakes and light food during your visit.

That makes it easy to spend several hours here without needing to leave the site.

A Few Useful Tips

Carew Castle & Tidal Mill is near Carew, Tenby, Pembrokeshire SA70 8SL.

During the main 2026 season, the castle is currently open from 10am to 4.30pm, while the Tidal Mill is open from 11am to 5pm.

The Tidal Mill is seasonal and closes during the winter months, so check current opening arrangements if you are visiting outside spring and summer.

The castle contains uneven historic surfaces, steps and changes of level, although some parts of the site are step-free.

Allow around two to three hours if you want to explore the castle, walk beside the millpond and visit the Tidal Mill without rushing.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome in many areas on a short lead, but check current restrictions before visiting specific indoor spaces.
