Garth Pier Bangor – Views, Cafés & Visitor Guide

Garth Pier is one of Bangor’s best-known landmarks and one of the finest surviving Victorian piers in Wales. Stretching out into the Menai Strait, it offers excellent views towards Anglesey, Eryri and the surrounding coast, along with cafés, small shops and a relaxed waterfront walk.

Garth Pier at a Glance

  • Best for: Couples, families, photographers, walkers and visitors looking for a relaxed scenic stop
  • Location: Bangor waterfront, North Wales
  • Main attractions: Menai Strait views, Victorian pier architecture, cafés, shops and coastal scenery
  • Time needed: Around 30–60 minutes, longer if stopping for food or browsing
  • Accessibility: Generally good along the main pier deck
  • Best for rainy days: Limited, as most of the visit is outdoors

What Is Garth Pier?

Garth Pier opened in 1896 and remains one of Bangor’s most distinctive historic landmarks. The pier extends for around 1,500 feet into the Menai Strait and still retains much of its traditional Victorian character.

It has undergone major restoration work over the years to preserve the structure, and Bangor City Council continues to maintain the pier for visitors and the local community.

Views from the Pier

The views are one of the main reasons to visit. From the pier you can look across the Menai Strait towards Anglesey, while the mountains of Eryri rise in the distance in the opposite direction.

On clear days you may also be able to see Penrhyn Castle, sailing boats on the strait and parts of the North Wales coastline.

Cafés and Shops

Garth Pier is more than just a place to walk. Several small businesses operate along the pier, including cafés, local food outlets, a traditional sweet shop, arts and crafts sellers and a gift shop.

The Pavilion Café operates throughout the year, while some other kiosks and seasonal businesses may have more limited opening arrangements.

Is Garth Pier Good for Families?

Yes. The flat pier deck makes it an easy walk for families, and children may enjoy the traditional kiosks, sweets and views over the water.

It is also a useful option for a short outing when you do not want to commit to a large attraction or full-day visit.

Accessibility

The main pier deck is relatively level, making Garth Pier more accessible than many of the hill and woodland attractions around North Wales.

Visitors with limited mobility should still check current conditions and access arrangements, particularly if maintenance work is taking place.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Clear days provide the best views across the Menai Strait, but the pier can be atmospheric at almost any time of year.

Late afternoon and evening can be especially attractive when the light falls across the water, and sunsets are often one of the highlights.

Combine It with a Day in Bangor

Garth Pier is easy to include as part of a wider visit to Bangor. The city centre, Storiel museum and gallery, university buildings and waterfront are all within easy reach.

It can also be combined with a trip across the Menai Strait towards Anglesey or with other attractions along the North Wales coast.
