Rhyl Marine Lake is a family-friendly leisure area at the western end of Rhyl, combining waterside scenery with Britain’s oldest miniature railway, crabbing, a children’s play area and a nature and heritage trail. It is a relaxed place to spend a few hours and works particularly well for families with younger children.
Marine Lake is a large waterside recreation area just behind Rhyl promenade. It has been used for leisure for generations and today is best known as the home of Rhyl Miniature Railway.
The surrounding area also includes open space, a children’s play area, crabbing opportunities and a nature and heritage trail, making it more than simply a place to ride the train.
Rhyl Miniature Railway first opened in 1911 and is now Britain’s oldest miniature railway. The line runs for approximately one mile around Marine Lake using open and enclosed passenger coaches.
On many peak operating days, trains are hauled by vintage steam locomotives, some of which were built in Rhyl during the 1920s.
The railway is particularly popular with younger children, but its history and traditional locomotives also make it interesting for railway enthusiasts.

Central Station includes a small accredited museum with interactive exhibits explaining the history of the railway and Marine Lake.
Children can explore hands-on displays, railway controls and information about how steam locomotives work.
Crabbing is a popular activity around the lake and is especially suitable for younger visitors looking for something simple and inexpensive to do.
Take care around the water’s edge and supervise children closely at all times.
A children’s play area is located close to Central Station and is aimed mainly at younger children.
This makes Marine Lake useful for families who want to combine a train ride with some free outdoor play rather than visiting several separate attractions.
The Marine Lake Nature and Heritage Trail explores the wildlife and history of the site.
Information points around the lake explain local birdlife, the wildlife living in the saltwater lake and the area’s leisure history. QR codes can also be used to access additional information on a smartphone.
Central Station has level accessible entrances and facilities for wheelchair users. One of the miniature railway carriages has been adapted so that visitors can travel while remaining in their wheelchair.
The wider Marine Lake area is relatively flat, making it one of the easier outdoor attractions in Rhyl for visitors with limited mobility.
The railway ticket office sells drinks, ice cream, confectionery and children’s gifts when the railway is operating.
Toilets at Central Station are available free of charge, including for visitors who are not travelling on the train.
Marine Lake is at the western end of Rhyl, behind the promenade and close to the harbour.
Pay-and-display parking is available at Marine Lake, with additional parking nearby at Quay Street.
Bus services also pass close to the lake, and the site is within walking distance of Rhyl Harbour and the Pont y Ddraig pedestrian bridge.
Marine Lake can easily be combined with other Rhyl attractions. SC2, the beach and promenade are all nearby, while Pont y Ddraig leads towards Rhyl Harbour and the surrounding waterfront.
For families, the combination of the miniature railway, play area, crabbing and a seafront visit can comfortably fill much of a day without requiring long journeys between attractions.
