Llangorse Multi Activity Centre

Llangorse Multi Activity Centre

Llangorse Multi Activity Centre is an award-winning indoor and outdoor activity destination that has been operating for over 65 years. It is currently open 7 days a week, all year round.

Where It Is

The centre is located at Gilfach Farm in Llangorse, near Brecon, Powys. It is set within the stunning Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park in Mid Wales, offering panoramic views across Llangorse Lake to the peaks of the mountains.

What You Can Do and Experience

Visitors can choose from a wide range of activities tailored for different ages and abilities:

  • Horse Riding: The BHS-approved riding centre offers trekking, hacking, and lessons on over 25 miles of private bridleways. This provides a unique experience of freedom without the need to ride on public roads.
  • Indoor Climbing: Home to the largest indoor climbing centre in Wales, featuring artificial walls, bouldering areas, and a unique natural limestone climbing wall.
  • Adventure Activities: Indoor and outdoor options include zip lining (including the 3km Sky Trek tour), caving systems, abseiling towers, and rope bridges.
  • Challenge Courses: There are multi-level assault courses, including a Junior Challenge Course for children aged 6–12 and a more advanced Multi-Level Challenge for those over 12.
  • Dingle Scramble: A popular group activity involving a wet and muddy 1.2km scramble through water features and tunnels.

Average Visit Duration

While people can visit for a single activity, others spend a significant portion of their day or even stay overnight in the on-site bunkhouses or camping pods.

  • Single Sessions: Typically last around 2 hours.
  • Multi-Activity Sessions: Many visitors opt for half-day or full-day packages.
  • Family Holidays: The centre also hosts summer adventure holidays where families stay for multiple days.

Who Will Enjoy It Most

The centre caters perfectly to:

  • Families: With activities designed for children as young as 4 to 6 years old (such as led pony walks) up to adults.
  • Adrenaline Seekers: Those looking for the heights of the Sky Trek or the challenge of the climbing walls.
  • Equestrian Enthusiasts: Riders of all levels, from complete beginners to experienced hackers.
  • Groups: It is highly popular for school trips, corporate team building, and youth groups.

Suitability and Limitations

While the centre is inclusive, some experiences may be limited by personal circumstances:

  • Age and Height Restrictions: Most main activities are for ages 6 and over. Certain high-level courses like the Sky Trek or Multi-Level Challenge have higher age or height requirements (often 12+).
  • Physical Fitness: Activities like the Dingle Scramble or advanced climbing require a degree of physical stamina.
  • Accessibility: The rural and multi-level nature of the site may present challenges for those with significant mobility issues, though instructors are experienced in adapting sessions for various abilities.

Best Time to Visit

  • Quiet Times: Weekdays during school term time are generally much quieter than weekends or holidays.
  • All-Weather: Because many of the premier facilities (climbing, caving, ropes) are indoors, it is a perfect destination for rainy days.
  • Fun and Atmosphere: Summer months and school holidays offer a livelier atmosphere and the best chance for dry weather for the outdoor treks and zip lines.

Unique Features

Unlike other nearby adventure centres, Llangorse is unique because:

  • It combines the largest indoor climbing facility in Wales with an extensive on-site riding centre.
  • The Sky Trek is a one-of-a-kind aerial zip line tour not found elsewhere in Europe in this format.
  • The horse riding takes place entirely on private land and bridleways, avoiding traffic entirely.

Budget and Cost Effectiveness

  • Activity Packages: Booking a half-day or full-day session is often more cost-effective than paying for individual activities separately.
  • Group Discounts: Significant savings are often available for large groups, schools, or corporate bookings.
  • Membership: Frequent local climbers can benefit from climbing memberships, which provide more economical access to the walls throughout the year.
  • On-site Facilities: Bringing your own supplies can help a tight budget, though the Base Camp Cafe provides reasonably priced local treats like Welsh cakes.

Advice for Visitors

  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, active clothing. For horse riding, long trousers and sturdy boots with a small heel are best. For the Dingle Scramble, bring old clothes and a towel, as you will get wet and muddy.
  • Food: The on-site Base Camp Cafe serves hot and cold meals, but there are also areas suitable for a quick snack between activities.
  • Parking: There is free on-site parking available for visitors.
  • Booking: Pre-booking is essential for most activities to ensure instructor availability, especially during peak seasons.
