Walking, Cycling & Riding

Exploring the trails of Norwich and its surrounding countryside offers a refreshing way to see the city and the broader Norfolk landscape. Whether you are on foot, two wheels, or horseback, the area is criss-crossed with paths that blend urban history with peaceful natural escapes. Visitors can enjoy a massive variety of scenery. You can wander through the historic city centre with its cobbled lanes and riverside paths, or head slightly further out to experience the Marriott’s Way, a famous long-distance trail that follows a former railway line. You’ll see ancient flint walls, hidden gardens, serene river views of the Wensum, and lush woodland stretches that feel miles away from the city bustle.

Walking & Multi-Use Trails

For longer excursions, several iconic trails start or pass through Norwich. These are often shared between walkers and cyclists.

  • Marriott’s Way: A 26-mile off-road trail following two disused railway lines between Norwich and Aylsham. It is open to walkers, cyclists, and horse riders.
  • Boudicca Way: A 36-mile walking route running between Norwich Station and Diss. It passes through rural South Norfolk and historical sites like the Roman Town at Caistor St Edmund.
  • Wherryman’s Way: A 35-mile trail following the River Yare from Norwich to Great Yarmouth, popular for its wildlife and riverside views.
  • Riverside Walk: A shorter, scenic path following the River Wensum through the heart of the city.

Riding (Bridleways)

While much of the city is pedestrianised,

Marriott’s Way is the primary long-distance route explicitly open to horse riders. It features a mixture of tarmac, gravel, and earth surfaces suitable for horses.
