Africa Alive!

Africa Alive! is a walking safari set across 100 acres of Suffolk countryside. Located in Kessingland, near Lowestoft, it focuses specifically on the wildlife and conservation of the African continent.

What to See and Do

The heart of the park is the Plains of Africa, an expansive paddock where you can watch giraffes, rhinos, zebras, and various antelopes roaming together. A large boardwalk allows you to walk through the reed beds to spot lemurs and birds.

Key experiences include:

  • The Lion House: Home to a pride of African lions.
  • Feeding Talks: Expert keepers share insights during scheduled feeds for cheetahs, lemurs, and meerkats.
  • The Discovery Centre: A place to get closer to smaller invertebrates and reptiles.
  • Adventure Play: There are significant indoor and outdoor play areas for children to burn off energy.

Duration of Visit

On average, visitors spend 4 to 6 hours here. If you attend all the keeper talks and have children who want to use the play areas, it is easily a full-day activity.

Who is it Best For?

  • Families: It is highly suited for those with toddlers and primary-school-aged children due to the mix of animals and playgrounds.
  • Photography Enthusiasts: The open-plan enclosures provide great sightlines without heavy fencing.
  • Nature Lovers: The park feels less “urban” than many zoos, with plenty of natural greenery.

Who might be bored?
Teenagers or adults looking for high-octane thrill rides may find the pace too slow, as the focus is on observation and education rather than entertainment.

Best Time to Visit

  • Weather: As an outdoor attraction, a dry, overcast day is often best. Many animals are more active when it isn’t scorching hot, and you’ll avoid the rain.
  • Quiet Times: To avoid crowds, aim for term-time weekdays. If visiting during school holidays, arriving right at opening allows you to see the animals at their most active before the afternoon heat.

Unique Features

What sets it apart is its specific African focus and the “Safari Roadshow,” which provides a more interactive look at the animals. The sight of multiple species grazing together on the “Plains” is a rare find in the UK.

Budget and Value

  • Annual Memberships: For locals or families who visit more than three times a year, an annual pass is significantly more cost-effective. It often includes perks like discounts in the gift shop and café.
  • Group Discounts: Savings are usually available for larger parties or seniors.
  • Special Schemes: It is worth checking for Blue Light Card discounts or Tesco Clubcard partner vouchers, as these have historically been accepted to reduce entry costs.
  • Off-Peak: Visiting during the winter months is often cheaper, though some animals may be in their indoor quarters.

Helpful Advice

  • Footwear: You will be doing a lot of walking on various terrains; comfortable trainers or boots are essential.
  • Food: While there is an on-site restaurant and snack bars, they can be expensive for large families. There are plenty of picnic benches if you prefer to bring your own food.
  • Parking: There is ample free on-site parking.
  • Accessibility: The site is generally flat and accessible for buggies and wheelchairs, though some of the woodland paths can be a bit bumpy.

Nearby Enhancements

If you have time left in your day, the Kessingland Beach is just a short drive away for a coastal walk. For a different kind of experience, the Lowestoft Transport Museum is nearby and offers a nostalgic look at vintage vehicles.
