Cambrian Heritage Railway

The Cambrian Heritage Railway is a great shout if you’re heading to Oswestry in Shropshire. It’s not just one spot but two separate sites—one in Oswestry town and another in the nearby village of Weston Wharf—that celebrate the golden age of steam.

It’s definitely more of an “interesting” heritage experience rather than a high-octane theme park. You can explore the old station building, browse a museum packed with railway memorabilia, and, of course, take a ride on a vintage train. The journey between Oswestry and Weston Wharf is short but sweet, giving you that classic “clickety-clack” nostalgia.

Who will enjoy it?

• Young Kids: Usually love the novelty of the big engines and the “choo-choo” factor. It’s a very safe, contained environment, though you’ll need to keep a close eye on them near the tracks and when boarding.
• Teenagers: Unless they are massive history buffs or aspiring engineers, they might find it a bit “slow.” It’s a “see it once” kind of place for most teens.

Since you’re in the area, you can easily combine this with a trip to Old Oswestry Hill Fort for a bit of a hike and some incredible views, or head into Oswestry town centre to poke around the independent shops and the indoor market.
