Lincoln Cathedral

Situated majestically at the top of Steep Hill in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, this cathedral is an absolute showstopper. It was once the tallest building in the world, and even today, its scale is genuinely breath-taking.

What to Expect

You aren’t just looking at a big church; you are exploring a massive Gothic masterpiece. You can wander through the nave, explore the intricate Cloisters, and hunt for the famous Lincoln Imp hidden high in the stone carvings. If you aren’t afraid of heights, the Tower Tours are a must—they offer the best views of the county, though you’ll need to be at least 14 years old to climb.

Who is it for?

  • Adults & History Buffs: You’ll be in your element. It is incredibly interesting, filled with layers of history and stunning architecture.
  • Teenagers: Unless they love photography or history, they might find it a bit “samey” after 45 minutes. However, the surrounding area is cool enough to keep them interested.
  • Young Children: There is a dedicated Discovery Centre and explorer backpacks to keep them busy, but this is a “hands-off” environment. Expect to keep a close eye on them to ensure they stay quiet and respectful. It isn’t a place where parents can switch off while kids run wild.

Planning Your Time

Most people spend about 2 to 3 hours here. If you add a tour or spend time in the café, you could easily stretch that to half a day.

Budget & Value

While there is an entry fee, it’s a “pay once, visit for a year” deal, making annual passes great value for locals.

  • Discounts: Savings are usually available for seniors, students, and children. Young kids (typically under 5) often get in for free.
  • Top Tip: If you just want a quick look without the full tour, you can often enter the morning services or the nave for free, but you won’t get to see the best bits like the Chapter House.

Parking & Food

Parking directly outside is very limited and can be pricey. It’s better to use the Park and Ride or the large car parks at the bottom of the hill—just be prepared for a very steep walk up!
The cathedral has its own refectory for light bites, but you are spoilt for choice nearby.

Make a Day of It

Because the cathedral sits in the historic Bailgate area, you can easily combine it with:

  • Lincoln Castle: Located directly opposite; you can do both in one day.
  • Steep Hill: Full of independent shops and tea rooms.
  • The Collection: A nearby museum if you want more local history.
