Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway

The Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway is located in North East Lincolnshire. Far from being a basic train ride, it is one of Britain’s oldest seaside miniature railways and packs a surprising amount of character into its track.

What’s the experience like?

The line runs for about two miles along the Cleethorpes coast. You’ll hop on a small-scale steam or diesel locomotive that chugs along from near the leisure centre toward the Humber Mouth. It’s an open-air, breezy trip with great views of the coast, making it more of a nostalgic experience than a high-speed journey.

Who will enjoy it?

  • Young Children: This is their “Goldilocks” attraction—not too long, not too loud, and very exciting.
  • Teenagers: Likely to find it a bit slow unless they are into engineering or vintage transport. It’s more of a “do it for the photo” or a way to get from A to B for them.
  • Parents: It’s a very relaxed environment. While you can’t exactly leave children alone (they’ll need supervision near the tracks and on the trains), it’s a “sit down and breathe” activity while the kids are mesmerised by the engine.

Essential Details

  • Time Spent: Most people spend about 1 to 2 hours here, though you can stay longer if you stop for a snack.
  • Best Suited For: Families with primary-aged children, grandparents, and “railwayiacs.”
  • Restrictions: There are no specific height or age limits, but carriages are compact, so larger groups might need to split up across rows.

Budget & Value

  • Discounts: Keep an eye out for Blue Light Card discounts or Senior rates which are usually offered.
  • Memberships: If you live nearby, an annual pass is worth it as it often pays for itself in just a few visits.
  • Parking & Food: Local council parking nearby can be pricey, so check the side streets further down. The railway has its own pub, The Signal Box Inn, which claims to be the smallest pub in the world—it’s quirky and reasonably priced for a drink.

Making a day of it

Since the railway is linear, you can use it to connect different parts of your day. It drops you off near the Discovery Centre and the boating lake, where kids can feed ducks or play in the sandpit. If you’re hungry, the surrounding area is packed with traditional fish and chip shops—it’s Cleethorpes, after all!
