Doddington Hall is a stunning Elizabethan mansion located in Lincolnshire, just on the outskirts of Lincoln. It is a lived-in family home that feels warm and personal rather than like a cold museum. Because it hasn’t been sold or cleared out in over 400 years, it is packed with a quirky, continuous history of one family’s furniture, paintings, and even an authentic Egyptian tent.
The Experience
The Hall: You’ll find a fascinating collection of weaponry, ceramics, and textiles. It’s a “hands-off” historical house, so younger children will need close supervision to ensure they don’t touch the delicate artefacts.
The Gardens: There are five acres of spectacular gardens, including formal walled areas and a wild garden.
For Kids: A firm favourite is the gravel labyrinth on the lawn where children can burn off energy.
For Teens: While the house might be a “see it once” for them, the wider estate is more engaging, offering padel tennis courts and a professional bike shop.
Estate Walks: Beyond the formal gardens, there are several trails ranging from 30 to 90 minutes. These are free to access and offer a chance to spot local wildlife.
Duration: Most visitors spend about 1 to 1.5 hours in the Hall and another hour or more exploring the gardens and shops.
Activities for Families & Adventurers
Cycling: The Georgie Twigg Track is a fantastic, entirely off-road tarmac path that runs toward Lincoln. It’s perfect for families as it’s flat and safe. You can hire manual or e-bikes from the on-site Giant Lincoln bike shop.
Nature Skills: The estate often runs “Wilder” workshops, such as scavenger hunts for ages 3–11 or bushcraft and den building for older kids aged 8–15.
Seasonal Fun: Keep an eye out for summer trails, pumpkin picking, and a very popular Christmas transformation where the Hall is themed with festive displays.
Practical Bits & Budgeting
Parking: Good news—parking is free.
Food: There is a range of options from the high-end Restaurant & Bar to the more casual Grain Store Café and Farm Shop Café. While the food is high quality (often using estate-grown produce), it can be on the pricier side.
Discounts & Memberships:
Free Entry: Members of Historic Houses get free entry to the Hall and Gardens. RHS members can access the gardens for free (excluding special event periods).
Savings: There are 2-for-1 offers available for CPRE and Gardeners’ World cardholders on specific ticket types.
Annual Pass: If you live nearby, a season ticket is worth it for families as it covers the popular sculpture exhibitions and Christmas events.
Shopping: The estate features a Farm Shop, a Country Clothing store, and a Home store. It’s a great place to browse, though it’s easy to spend more than intended!
