Burghley House

Burghley House is a grand Elizabethan mansion located on the edge of Stamford in Lincolnshire. It is a major attraction set within vast parkland designed by Capability Brown, offering a mix of high-end history, interactive gardens, and a large-scale woodland adventure for families.

Things to See and Do

  • The House State Rooms: You can explore grand rooms filled with tapestries, fine art, and incredibly detailed painted ceilings. It feels very “lived-in” rather than like a museum.
    • For Kids: Pick up a Beastly Boring Guidebook to hunt for hidden animals in paintings and discover “grisly” historical facts. This keeps children engaged with the history without it being a lecture.
    • Suitability: Best for adults and older children interested in art/history, though the kids’ guides make it accessible for ages 6–11.
  • The Garden of Surprises: This is a high-energy, interactive water garden. Expect “trick” fountains that shoot water from the ground, a mirror maze, and a shell grotto.
    • For Kids: Younger children and primary-aged kids love racing through the water. Teens might find it a bit young but usually enjoy the maze.
    • Parents’ Break: You can sit nearby and watch the chaos, but keep an eye on them as they will likely get wet.
  • Hide & Secrets Adventure Play: A massive woodland play area with towers, rope bridges, and huge slides.
    • Ages: The main structure is best for ages 4–12, but there is a dedicated toddler area for those under 5.
    • Restrictions: The two largest slides have a height restriction of 1.2 metres.
  • The Sculpture Garden & Parkland: A more relaxed, “interesting” area where modern sculptures are hidden amongst trees and wildflowers. The wider parkland is home to a resident herd of fallow deer.

Planning Your Visit

  • Time Spent: Most families spend between 3 to 5 hours, though you could easily stay for a full day if you include a long walk in the parkland.
  • Supervision: Children need close supervision in the water gardens and adventure play. While the play area is safe and fenced, it is vast and has multi-level towers.
  • Budget & Discounts:
    • Online Savings: Booking in advance online typically saves 10% on ticket prices.
    • English Heritage: Members get a 20% discount when booking in person at the ticket desk.
    • Blue Light Card: Holders can often access a 25% discount using a specific online code.
    • Annual Membership: You can upgrade a day ticket to an annual pass within 30 days of your visit, which is excellent value if you plan to return just once or twice.
  • Parking & Food:
    • Parking is free and there is plenty of space.
    • Dining: The Orangery is more formal and can be expensive. For a quicker, family-friendly bite, the Garden Café or the Muddy Mole (near the play area) are better bets.
    • Picnics: You are welcome to bring your own food; there are plenty of picnic benches around the adventure play area.
