Stanwick Lakes is a sprawling 750-acre countryside attraction in Northamptonshire that offers a mix of serious nature conservation and high-energy family adventure. It is essentially a massive outdoor playground set within a beautiful wetland nature reserve.

What to Do and See

• The Hub of Fun: Right near the main entrance is a huge wooden adventure playground. It’s built naturally into the landscape and features a moat, water wheels, sand play, and a massive climbing tower with a giant slide.
• Splash and Sand: There is an extensive water-play area with small streams and mini flumes. Young children absolutely love this, while parents can set up a base on the grassy banks nearby.
• Adventure Trail: A 1-mile trail that loops through the site, peppered with hidden play equipment like zip lines, rope bridges over water, and climbing rocks.
• Assault Course: Located about a ten-minute walk from the visitor centre, this is a serious timber obstacle course. It’s perfect for teenagers and active adults who want to test their strength—think balance beams, climbing walls, and high-energy challenges.
• Heritage and Nature: For those who want something more “interesting” than “active,” there is a Heritage Museum on the mezzanine of the visitor centre showcasing 10,000 years of history. You can also find a reconstructed Iron Age Roundhouse overlooking the original settlement site.

Information for Walkers and Cyclists

The site is fantastic for those on two wheels or two feet, with over 7 miles of paths.

• Nature Ramble: A circular route of about 2.5 miles. It is flat, has a hard surface, and is fully accessible for prams and wheelchairs.
• Linear Cycle Route: A 4-mile stretch that follows a disused railway line towards Thrapston. It is an off-road, gravel/hard-packed surface, offering great views of the lakes and river without being too muddy.
• Adventure Trail: A shorter circular walk of roughly 1.5 miles that hits all the play equipment.
• Points of Interest: Keep an eye out for several bird hides dotted along the routes and the Heritage Trail markers, which are tall stone posts depicting different historical eras.

Is it for you?

• Toddlers and Young Kids: They will be in heaven. The sand and water play are designed specifically for them. Warning: Bring a change of clothes and a towel—they will get wet and muddy.
• Teenagers: Often find the main playground too “young,” but the assault course and the larger climbing rocks on the adventure trail usually keep them engaged. Axe throwing is also available for those aged 11 and over.
• For Parents: If you position yourself well by the playground, the kids can roam in a relatively contained area while you get a bit of a breather. However, young children need close supervision near the water and on the taller climbing structures.
• People on a Budget: Entry to the park is free if you walk or cycle in. You only pay for parking if you arrive by car.

• Nearby Enhancements: If you want to make a full weekend of it, the Rushden Lakes shopping and leisure complex is just a short drive away, offering more restaurants, a cinema, and further lakeside walks.

Is it worth it? Absolutely. It’s a “destination” park rather than a local patch of grass. You can easily spend 3 to 5 hours here, and for families, it’s one of the best value-for-money days out in the county if you bring a picnic and just pay for the parking.
