Delapre Abbey

Delapré Abbey is a sprawling 900-year-old estate located in Northamptonshire, just a short hop from Northampton town centre. It is far more than just a quiet historic building; it is a massive multi-activity destination with over 500 acres of parkland, gardens, and a restored house designed specifically for “hands-on” exploration.

What can you do there?

  • The House: Unlike most stuffy stately homes, this one is built for families. Most furniture is replica, meaning kids (and adults) are actively encouraged to sit on the sofas, touch the objects, and even try on medieval helmets or fire a bow and arrow.
  • The Grounds: You can wander through 500 acres of open parkland and woodland. There are dedicated trails leading to a lake where you can spot deer and waterbirds.
  • The Gardens: Explore the tranquil Walled Garden or the arboretum. The gardens are beautifully maintained and offer plenty of space for children to run free.
  • Activities: On Saturdays, the “ParkPlay” sessions offer free community games on the lawn. Throughout the year, the Abbey hosts street food festivals, classic car shows, and open-air theatre.

Is it right for you?

  • Families & Young Children: This is a winner. The “touch everything” policy inside the house is a huge relief for parents. Under 18s get into the house for free, making it a very affordable day out.
  • Teenagers: They might enjoy the freedom of the parkland or the more interactive “battle archaeology” and medieval themes, but if they aren’t into history or long walks, they might find the main house a bit slow-paced.
  • Supervision: While the parkland is wide and open, children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. The interactive nature of the house allows parents to be a bit more relaxed, but close supervision is still needed to ensure nothing is actually broken!
  • Time Spent: Most visitors spend around 2 to 3 hours if exploring the house and gardens, but you could easily make it a full day if you include a long walk in the parkland.

Planning Your Visit

  • Budget & Discounts: While under 18s go free, adults pay a small admission fee for the house.
    • Annual Pass: Frequent visitors should look into the annual pass, which offers great value for families living locally.
    • Discounts: They often participate in the Blue Light Card scheme and offer discounts for carers. They also accept Historic Houses memberships.
  • Food & Drink:
    • The Orangery Café: A very popular, dog-friendly spot for light lunches, cakes, and afternoon tea. It has lovely views over the grounds.
    • Hibiscus: For something more special, this is an award-winning fine-dining restaurant located right in the Abbey.
  • Parking: There is plenty of free parking on-site, which is a major bonus for a day out.
