The Lowry

The Lowry is a striking landmark located at Salford Quays in Greater Manchester. It’s a massive, shiny metallic building that’s hard to miss and sits right on the waterfront, making it a great spot for a wander even before you step inside.

What’s the vibe?
It’s a mix of a high-end theatre, an art gallery, and a community space. Because it houses everything from big West End touring musicals to quiet art rooms, the atmosphere changes depending on what time you visit. It’s generally quite relaxed and modern.

What can you do there?

  • The Galleries: You can see the world’s largest collection of paintings and drawings by LS Lowry. It’s definitely more “interesting” than “high-octane entertainment,” so it’s perfect if you enjoy art or local history.
  • The Theatres: There are three separate stages. You might catch a massive Broadway musical, a stand-up comedian, a contemporary dance piece, or even a gritty drama.
  • The Lookout: This is a dedicated space for families and children to get creative, draw, and play. It’s a good spot to let the kids blow off some steam in a sensory-friendly way.

Who is it for?

  • Adults: This is the primary audience. Between the art galleries and the evening shows, it’s a top-tier date night or afternoon out for culture vultures.
  • Teenagers: Unless they are into drama, dance, or art, they might find the galleries a bit “dry.” However, the surrounding Quays area usually keeps them interested.
  • Young Kids: The galleries might be a “look but don’t touch” challenge for very energetic toddlers, but The Lookout space is designed specifically for them. For most of the building, children will need close supervision.

How long will you stay?
If you are just visiting the galleries and having a coffee, two to three hours is plenty. If you are seeing a show, you’ll obviously be there much longer.

Money and Food

  • Discounts: It’s worth checking for “Under 30s” schemes if you have young adults in the group, as they often get cheaper tickets for certain performances. They also typically offer discounts for seniors and groups.
  • Annual Memberships: These are a solid investment if you live nearby and plan on seeing multiple theatre shows a year, as they give you priority booking and bar discounts.
  • Food & Parking: There is a bar and restaurant inside which is lovely but can be a bit pricey. Parking is available in the massive multi-storey car park right next door (The Lowry Outlet), but it’s not free and can add up if you stay all day.

Nearby Gems
The Lowry is perfectly placed to make a full day of it. You can walk across the footbridge to MediaCityUK to see where the BBC and ITV live. Right next door is the Lowry Outlet Mall for a bit of shopping and a cinema, and the Imperial War Museum North is just a short walk across the water. There are heaps of chain restaurants like Nando’s and Pizza Express, plus some trendier bars along the water if you want to grab a drink after a show.
