Lightwater Valley Theme Park

Lightwater Valley Family Adventure Park is located in North Stainley, near Ripon (HG4 3HTNorth Yorkshire).

Once known for having one of the longest rollercoasters in the world, the park has shifted its focus over the last few years. It is now specifically designed as a family-oriented park tailored for children under the age of 12. If you have toddlers or primary-school-aged kids, this is a fantastic, manageable day out that isn’t as overwhelming (or exhausting!) as the massive UK theme parks.

What to Do and See
The park is packed with over 40 rides and attractions. The “Tree Top Trails” is a massive hit—it’s a huge net adventure high in the trees that lets the kids burn off energy without needing harnesses. For those who love a bit of a splash, the Splash Falls water slides are a classic, and the Savanna Express takes you on a cute little train journey to see some animatronic animals.

There are also indoor play areas for when the British weather decides not to cooperate, and a “Discovery Vultures” area where you can get a look at some impressive birds of prey.

Useful Tips and Budgeting

  • Duration: Most families find that 4 to 5 hours is plenty of time to see everything without rushing.
  • Food: While there are on-site cafes serving the usual burgers and nuggets, many regular visitors recommend bringing a picnic. There are plenty of grassy spots and benches, and it’s a great way to keep costs down as theme park snacks can add up.
  • Parking: The good news is that parking is free and right on-site, so you don’t need to worry about a long trek from the car with all your gear.
  • Savings: Keep an eye out for Blue Light discounts if you’re a service worker, and they often offer senior tickets for grandparents joining the fun. Booking online in advance is almost always cheaper than turning up at the gate.
  • Height Restrictions: Most rides have a minimum height requirement of 90cm to 100cm to ride with an adult, while the bigger attractions usually require kids to be over 1.2 metres to go solo.

Nearby Highlights
Since the park usually wraps up by late afternoon, you could easily pop into the nearby city of Ripon. It’s a gorgeous little cathedral city with a traditional market square. If the kids still have energy, the Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden is just a short drive away and offers stunning ruins and massive green spaces to explore.
