Stump Cross Caverns

Stump Cross Caverns is a hidden gem tucked away under the Yorkshire Dales. If you’re looking for a bit of an underground adventure, this is a brilliant spot where you can see some seriously impressive stalactites and stalagmites that have been forming for hundreds of thousands of years.

What’s the vibe?

It’s an ancient cave system that’s been lit up so you can wander through the limestone passageways. It feels a bit like stepping into another world! Because it’s underground, it stays a constant cool temperature year-round, making it a perfect “weather-proof” day out.

What can you do there?

• The Caves: You’ll put on a hard hat (essential for those low ceilings!) and head down into the illuminated caverns. There are fairy-themed trails for the younger ones to keep them engaged while they hunt for hidden clues.
• The Cinema: They have a quirky little on-site cinema that shows films about the caves’ history and how they were discovered by lead miners.
• The Fossil Shop: Even if you aren’t a collector, the shop is full of interesting crystals and fossils that are fun to look at.

Tips for your visit:

• Mind your head: Some of the passageways are quite tight and low, so if you are particularly tall or don’t like enclosed spaces, just be prepared for a bit of ducking!
• The “Cave Chill”: It’s always around 7°C down there, even in the height of summer. Bring a jumper and wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the ground can be slippery and uneven.
• Timing: Most people spend about one to two hours exploring the caves and grabbing a bite to eat.
• Restrictions: There aren’t strict age limits, but it’s not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs due to the steps and narrow gaps.

If you want to make a full day of it, you’re only a short drive from Pateley Bridge, a lovely little town with the “Oldest Sweet Shop in England”—definitely worth a stop for a sugar boost! You’re also close to Brimham Rocks, where you can scramble over giant natural rock formations for free.
