Tintagel

Tintagel is a legendary 13th-century castle ruin and early medieval stronghold steeped in Arthurian myth. Managed by English Heritage, it is a site where history and folklore intertwine on the rugged Cornish coast.

What and Where It Is
The Site: A dramatic medieval castle built half on the mainland and half on a jagged island headland. It was once a thriving 5th-century trading port for Cornish rulers before Richard, Earl of Cornwall, built the current ruins in the 1230s.
Location: It is situated in the village of Tintagel on the north coast of Cornwall, England, between Padstow and Bude.

Things to Do and Enjoy
Cross the Footbridge: Walk across the award-winning Tintagel Bridge, which spans a 190-foot gorge to reconnect the mainland to the island.
Explore Merlin’s Cave: Visit the natural sea cave at the base of the cliffs, accessible only at low tide, where legend says the wizard Merlin lived.
Meet “Gallos”: View the life-sized bronze sculpture of an ancient king, inspired by the legend of King Arthur, overlooking the Atlantic.
Relax at Tintagel Haven: Enjoy the secluded beach below the castle, perfect for paddling and spotting seals in the water.
Visit the Village: Explore the Tintagel Old Post Office, a 14th-century National Trust property, or the King Arthur’s Great Halls.

Who and When to Go
Ideal Audience: History buffs, legend seekers, families with imaginative children, and coastal hikers. It is not recommended for those with mobility issues or very young children in prams due to steep, uneven paths and numerous steps.
Best Time to Visit:
Season: Late June to early September for the best weather, though mid-to-low season (spring/autumn) is better to avoid the “hordes of tourists”.
Time of Day: Early morning is recommended to beat the crowds.
Condition: Check tide times before booking if you want to enter Merlin’s Cave.

What Makes It Unique
Mythical Status: It is famously cited as the place where King Arthur was conceived.
Dramatic Geography: The split nature of the site, with ruins clinging to nearly vertical cliffs, makes it one of Britain’s most picturesque locations.
Archaeological Depth: It contains rare evidence of high-status trade with the Mediterranean (wine and luxury pottery) during the “Dark Ages”.
