Bodmin & Wenford Railway – Cornwall

The Bodmin & Wenford Railway is a heritage steam attraction that offers a nostalgic 13-mile round trip through the heart of the Cornish countryside.

What is it and Where?
Located in Bodmin town centre (PL31 1AQ), it is Cornwall’s only full-size (standard gauge) railway still regularly operated by steam locomotives. The line runs from the beautifully restored 1950s-style Bodmin General Station to two separate destinations: Bodmin Parkway (connecting to the national mainline) and Boscarne Junction.

What to See and Do
The Journey: Experience the sights and sounds of a 1950s branch line across two scenic routes.
Station Exploration: At Bodmin General, visit the Exhibition Coach for historical artefacts, the workshop viewing area to see locomotives being maintained, and the gift shop.
Outdoor Connections: Alight at Boscarne Junction to access the Camel Trail for walking or cycling, or stop at Colesloggett Halt for a picnic near Cardinham Woods.
Food & Drink: Enjoy refreshments at the Old Booking Hall Café (Bodmin General) or the award-winning Station Cafe (Bodmin Parkway).

Who Should Go and When?
Audience: It is a great day out for families, railway enthusiasts, and dog owners (dogs are welcome for a small fee).
Timing: Trains run daily from late May to early October, with seasonal services in March, April, and December (for Santa by Steam).

Why It’s Unique

Unlike most heritage lines, Bodmin Railway operates over two distinct branch lines from a single central station, including one of the steepest gradients in the UK. It is also deeply tied to Cornwall’s China Clay heritage, often holding special galas featuring authentic clay wagons.
