Chillingham Castle
Northumberland, NE66 5NJ
If you’re looking for a day out that feels like stepping directly into a gritty medieval drama, Chillingham Castle is the place. It’s widely known as one of the most haunted castles in Britain, but even if you don’t believe in ghosts, the sheer “untouched” feel of the place is incredible. Unlike many polished heritage sites, Chillingham feels raw, ancient, and wonderfully eccentric.
What to Expect and Enjoy
The castle is packed with a massive collection of arms, armour, and oddities. You’ll wander through the Great Hall and State Rooms, which are atmospheric enough, but the real talking point is the Medieval Torture Chamber. It’s genuinely grim and fascinating, showing some of the more creative (and terrifying) ways people used to settle disputes.

For something a bit more serene, the Italian Garden is beautiful. It was designed in the mid-1800s and offers a lovely, formal contrast to the rugged stone of the fortress. You can also head out into the surrounding parkland to see the famous Chillingham Wild Cattle. These are rare, ancient beasts that have been pure-bred for centuries; they are quite a sight, but you’ll usually need to join a guided tour to see them safely.
Who Will Love It?
Planning Your Time
You’ll likely want to spend about 2 to 3 hours here to see the castle and the gardens. If you’re adding a walk to see the wild cattle, factor in an extra hour.
