Gloucester Cathedral rises above the city like something from a dream — 1,300 years of worship on one site, a soaring Norman nave, and the tomb of a murdered king. Its glorious fan-vaulted cloisters are among the earliest and finest in existence, and to a younger generation they’re something else entirely: the corridors of Hogwarts, seen in three of the Harry Potter films. Best of all, unlike most great cathedrals, entry is free, with a suggested donation towards the building’s upkeep.
Kings, Pilgrims and a Vast Window
Henry III was crowned here in 1216 — the only English coronation outside Westminster since 1066 — and after Edward II died at nearby Berkeley Castle in 1327, pilgrims flocking to his beautiful tomb paid for the great Gothic rebuilding you see today. That includes the Great East Window, the size of a tennis court and the largest window in the world when it was made, and a 225-foot tower visible for miles around.
The Hogwarts Cloisters
The cloisters, with their breathtaking fan vaulting created in the 1350s, appeared throughout the first two Harry Potter films and again in the Half-Blood Prince — Potter fans will recognise the corridor where “The Chamber of Secrets has been opened” appeared on the wall. Guided highlights tours cover the film spots along with a thousand years of history, and there are separate crypt tours, library tours and, for the energetic, tower climbs of 269 medieval steps to views stretching to the Malvern Hills.
Visiting Gloucester Cathedral
The cathedral sits at the heart of Gloucester, a short walk from the station and the revitalised Victorian docks at Gloucester Quays. It’s open daily (it’s a working cathedral, so services take priority), tours are bookable on the day at the welcome desk, and there’s a café and shop. Medieval church fans can pair it with Tewkesbury Abbey, just ten miles up the road, for a superb Gloucestershire double.
