Tamworth Castle

Tamworth Castle, Tamworth, Staffordshire

This remarkably well-preserved Norman motte-and-bailey castle sits right in the heart of Tamworth and offers a fantastic journey through over 900 years of history. Unlike some ruins where you have to use a lot of imagination, this castle is largely intact with 15 fully furnished period rooms to explore, ranging from Saxon beginnings to Victorian opulence.

  • What to See and Do: You can wander through Tudor and Stuart chambers, the grand Medieval Great Hall, and even climb to the top of the tower for 360-degree views of the town. A major highlight is the Battle and Tribute exhibition, which features impressive items from the famous Staffordshire Hoard and lets you get hands-on with Saxon battle tactics.
  • The Experience: It’s a very interactive “hands-on” history museum. You’ll find dressing-up areas where both kids and adults can try on armor or period costumes, and you can even try your hand at brass rubbing.
  • Suitability and Supervision:
    • Young Children: They will likely be enchanted by the “knight” experience and the storytelling events often held here.
    • Teenagers: While the history is interesting, some might find the “educational” aspect a bit slow unless they have a genuine interest in the Staffordshire Hoard or medieval weaponry.
    • Safety: Due to the nature of the building, there are many steep, narrow, and uneven stairs. Because of this, pushchairs aren’t allowed inside beyond the courtyard, and small children will need very close supervision. It is not a place where you can leave children to run free while you relax.
  • How Long to Spend: Most visitors find that 1.5 to 3 hours is plenty of time to see everything inside the castle. However, if you combine it with the grounds, you can easily make it a full day out.

The Castle Grounds
The castle is surrounded by extensive, award-winning public parkland that is free to enter.

  • Adventure Playground: A massive, all-inclusive play area with a castle-themed climbing frame and pirate ship. It’s perfect for letting the kids burn off steam while parents take a breather.
  • Activities: There is a state-of-the-art skate park, crazy golf, tennis courts, and even cycle hire if you want to explore the riverside paths.
  • Planet Walk: A fun sculpture trail that takes you on a scale walk through the solar system.

Planning Your Visit

  • Discounts and Offers: Look out for family tickets which usually offer a bit of a saving. Carers often get free entry with proof of status. If you live nearby, an annual membership is worth it as it pays for itself in just a few visits and often includes entry to special events like the medieval re-enactments or Saxon festivals.
  • Food and Drink: There is a small café inside the castle for tea and cake, and the Pavilion tea rooms are located in the grounds. If you’re on a budget, the grounds are perfect for a picnic.
  • Parking: There is no parking on-site, but several pay-and-display car parks are nearby. The Jolly Sailor car park is a popular choice—it’s a short, scenic 5-10 minute walk through the gardens to the castle.
  • Nearby Enhancements: The castle gatehouse leads directly into the town center, which is full of independent shops and pubs. For a bigger day out, you’re just a stone’s throw from the SnowDome or Ventura Retail Park, and Drayton Manor Theme Park is only a short drive away.
