Dudley Canal Trust

The Dudley Canal Trust (specifically the Dudley Canal & Tunnel International Centre) is located in Dudley, West Midlands. This isn’t just a walk by the water; it’s a chance to hop on a boat and head deep underground into a massive network of limestone caverns and tunnels.

The Experience
The main draw is the 45-minute underground boat trip. You’ll glide through tunnels hand-built during the Industrial Revolution and see impressive light shows projected onto the cavern walls. It’s fascinating, slightly eerie, and surprisingly peaceful. There are also longer themed trips occasionally, but the classic tunnel tour is the bread and butter here.

Who will love it?

• Young Kids: Usually find the boat and the dark tunnels quite an adventure. The “legging” demonstrations (how they used to move boats by walking on the walls) are a hit.
• Teenagers: Might find it a bit slow-paced unless they are into history or cool photography, but it’s unique enough that they usually don’t complain too much.
• Parents: It’s an “interesting” trip rather than high-octane entertainment. You’ll need to keep a close eye on very small children while on the boat, but it’s a generally safe, sit-down experience that gives everyone a bit of a breather.

• Food: The Gongoozler Restaurant is right on the waterfront. It’s a great spot for a hot meal or a coffee, and the prices are standard for a tourist attraction—not a total budget-buster.

Making a Day of It
You’ll likely spend about 2 to 3 hours here if you do the boat trip and grab a bite to eat. However, the Trust is literally right next door to the Black Country Living Museum. In fact, they share a boundary. If you want a full day out, combining these two is a “must-do.” You can also find the Dudley Zoo and Castle just a short drive away if you have any energy left!
