York Racecourse

York Racecourse is an absolute gem for a day out, located right on the Knavesmire in York, YO23 1EX, North Yorkshire. It’s widely considered one of the best tracks in the country, and even if you aren’t a massive horse racing fan, the atmosphere is electric and the people-watching is top-tier.

What’s the vibe?

Expect a mix of high fashion and high energy. On big race days, especially during the Ebor Festival in August, it is a sea of fancy hats and sharp suits. However, if you prefer something more laid-back, the Family Sunday in July is much more relaxed and geared towards kids, often featuring appearances from popular characters and extra entertainment like bouncy castles.

Things to see and do

  • The Pre-Parade Ring: It’s worth heading here to see the horses up close before they race. They are incredible athletes, and seeing them “in the flesh” is quite a sight.
  • The Winning Post: There is nothing like the roar of the crowd as the horses thunder toward the finish line.
  • The Roberto Village: This area usually has music and a great selection of food and drink, making it a hub of activity between races.

Insider tips for your budget

  • Pick your enclosure: The County Stand is the priciest with a strict dress code. The Grandstand & Paddock is the “middle ground” with great views and a lively feel. If you want a fun, cheap day out with the family, the Clocktower Enclosure is the budget-friendly choice where you can see the action across the track.
  • Picnics: This is a big one! You can actually bring your own food and drink into the Clocktower Enclosure. It’s a brilliant way to save money, as trackside food can be a bit pricey. Just check the specific rules on glass bottles before you pack the hamper.
  • Group Discounts: If you are heading there with a big group of friends or family, booking in advance usually nets you a better rate than turning up on the day.
  • Parking: There is plenty of free parking on-site, which is a massive bonus. However, it can get very busy when leaving, so some visitors prefer to park in the city and take the shuttle bus from York Station to avoid the post-race traffic.

How long will you stay?

Most people make a full day of it. Gates usually open a few hours before the first race, and the festivities carry on until about half an hour after the last one. Expect to spend about 5 to 6 hours there.

Nearby fun

Since the racecourse is so close to the city centre, you can easily combine a trip with a wander through York’s historic streets. Many racegoers head into the city afterwards to celebrate (or commiserate!) in the various bars and restaurants around Micklegate and The Shambles.

Pro tip from regular visitors: Wear comfortable shoes! Even in the fancy enclosures, you’ll be doing a lot of walking between the betting ring, the bars, and the trackside. Your feet will thank you by the fifth race!
