Cowbridge

Cowbridge is one of the prettiest small market towns in South Wales and is a good choice when you want somewhere relaxed rather than a full day of major attractions.

The historic centre is easy to explore on foot, with independent shops, cafés, old buildings and a peaceful walled garden tucked away just behind the main streets.

Wander Along the High Street

Cowbridge is best enjoyed without much of a plan.

The main streets are lined with a mixture of historic buildings, independent shops, cafés and small businesses, so it is easy to spend an hour or two simply browsing.

There are plenty of familiar everyday shops too, but the independent businesses are what give the town most of its character.

Best approached slowly: Cowbridge is not about rushing between attractions. It works best as a relaxed wander with time for coffee, shopping and a few quieter corners.

Visit the Physic Garden

Cowbridge Physic Garden is one of the town’s nicest surprises.

Hidden within the old town walls, the walled garden contains historic medicinal and useful plants arranged in traditional beds.

It was created on the site of an old kitchen garden and is designed to show the kinds of plants that would have been grown for practical purposes in earlier centuries.

The garden is free to enter and is a peaceful place to stop for a while away from the busier high street.

Browse the Independent Shops

Shopping is one of Cowbridge’s strongest reasons to visit.

You will find fashion, gifts, food, books, homeware and other independent businesses spread along the high street and through the smaller side streets and arcades.

It is the sort of place where you are more likely to find something unusual than in a standard shopping centre.

Visit the Saturday Farmers’ Market

If you can, time your visit for Saturday.

Cowbridge Farmers’ Market brings local producers into town with food, produce and other goods, adding a little more atmosphere to the centre.

It is a good fit with the town’s strong food culture, especially if you enjoy buying something local to take home.

Stop for Something to Eat

Cowbridge has a particularly strong food scene for a town of its size.

There are cafés, pubs, restaurants, delis and food shops scattered through the centre, so lunch is worth treating as part of the visit rather than something to squeeze in between sightseeing.

The town also hosts food-related events during the year, which can make the centre much busier than usual.

Look Beyond the Town

Cowbridge sits in the middle of the Vale of Glamorgan, so it is easy to combine with a countryside or coastal stop.

The surrounding area has rolling farmland, small villages and easy access towards places such as Llantwit Major, Southerndown and the Vale coastline.

That makes Cowbridge particularly useful as part of a relaxed touring day rather than necessarily a destination you need to spend from morning until evening exploring.

A Few Useful Tips

Cowbridge is compact and is best explored on foot once you have parked.

Allow around two to four hours for a relaxed visit, depending on how much time you spend shopping or stopping for food.

Cowbridge Physic Garden is currently free to enter and opens every day. The official garden site lists summer opening as 10am to 6pm and winter opening as 10am to 4pm.

The farmers’ market is normally held on Saturdays, so that is one of the liveliest times to visit.

The town centre can become busy during markets and special events, so earlier arrival usually makes parking easier.

This is one place where I would leave enough time for lunch rather than treating food as an afterthought.
