🏡 Romantic Cottage Breaks

A Cottage Just for Two

There is something genuinely magical about arriving at a beautiful cottage that’s entirely yours for the weekend. No other guests, no timetables, no obligations — just you, a stunning setting and as much peace and quiet as you want. Light the fire, open the wine and forget about the rest of the world for a few days.

The UK has thousands of cottages perfectly suited to couples — from tiny fisherman’s cottages steps from a Cornish beach to converted barns in the Yorkshire Dales, from clifftop retreats in Pembrokeshire to secluded Highland hideaways in Scotland. Many have hot tubs, wood-burning stoves, four-poster beds and private gardens — making them every bit as luxurious as a hotel but with far more privacy and character.

Cottages with Hot Tubs

If you really want to treat yourselves, a cottage with a private hot tub is hard to beat. Sitting in a hot tub under the stars, in the middle of the countryside, with a glass of something cold in hand — it’s one of life’s great pleasures. Hot tub cottages have become enormously popular so book well in advance, especially for weekends and school holiday periods.

🎭 Theatre Breaks

A West End Theatre Break in London

A night at the theatre followed by a stay in a lovely London hotel is one of the classic romantic short breaks — and it never gets old. The West End has something for every taste: sweeping musicals, gripping dramas, sharp comedies, spectacular new productions and long-running classics that have been wowing audiences for decades.

The formula is simple and brilliant — book your show first, then find a hotel nearby. Staying in Covent Garden, Soho or Leicester Square puts you within easy walking distance of most West End theatres. Add dinner beforehand at one of the countless brilliant restaurants in the area and you have a genuinely perfect evening.

🌊 Coastal Breaks for Couples

The UK’s Most Romantic Coastal Destinations

There’s something about the coast that does something to a relationship — the wide-open views, the sound of the sea, the feeling of being properly away from it all. The UK has some of the most beautiful and varied coastline in Europe, and a coastal break is one of the most reliably enjoyable things a couple can do together.

Our favourite romantic coastal spots include St Ives in Cornwall, Whitby in North Yorkshire, Tenby in Pembrokeshire, Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire, Bamburgh in Northumberland, Portree on Skye and Kinsale in Ireland. Each has its own distinct character and each is genuinely beautiful.

💍 Anniversaries

For an anniversary, go for something a little more special than usual — a cottage with a hot tub, a night in a gorgeous country house hotel, a theatre break in London or a coastal retreat you’ve always talked about visiting. The effort of planning something thoughtful is part of the gift.

🎂 Birthday Breaks

A birthday short break is one of the nicest gifts you can give a partner. Find out what they’d love — a spa, a particular city, a show they’ve always wanted to see, a walking weekend in the hills — and book it. The anticipation of a trip to look forward to is almost as good as the trip itself.

❤️ Valentine’s Day & Spontaneous Breaks

Valentine’s weekend hotel rooms and cottages book up extremely fast — sometimes months in advance. If you’re planning a Valentine’s break, book early. That said, a spontaneous mid-week break in February can be just as romantic as a weekend away — and often much better value with more availability. LateRooms is particularly good for finding deals at short notice.

Tips for Planning the Perfect Couples Break

Book early for weekends — the best cottages and hotels for couples fill up fast, especially for Friday and Saturday nights. If you have a specific date in mind, don’t leave it too long.

Mid-week breaks are often better value — and quieter too. A Tuesday to Thursday break in a beautiful cottage or hotel is often significantly cheaper than the same property on a weekend, and you’ll have attractions and restaurants more to yourselves.

Think about what you both actually enjoy — the best couples breaks are ones where both people genuinely want to be there. A spa weekend is perfect if you both love that sort of thing, but not so much if one of you would rather be on a coastal walk. Play to your shared interests.

Don’t over-plan — some of the best moments on a short break are the unplanned ones. Leave space in your itinerary to wander, linger over lunch or simply sit and enjoy the view. You’re not on a schedule.

Turn your phone off — or at least put it away for significant parts of the trip. A break where you’re both constantly checking your phones isn’t really a break at all.

Consider travelling off-peak — September and October are wonderful months for a UK break. The summer crowds have gone, the autumn colours are spectacular, the weather is often still very pleasant and prices drop significantly.
