Drayton Manor Resort and Zoo is a major family-friendly destination located in Staffordshire, near Tamworth. It is far from a small community facility; it’s a full-scale resort that combines a theme park, a 15-acre zoo, and the famous Thomas Land.

What to Expect and Who It’s For

The park is essentially a “goldilocks” theme park—not as overwhelming as Alton Towers but much bigger than a local fair.

• Young Children (Ages 2–10): This is the star demographic. Thomas Land is one of the best areas in the UK for little ones, featuring over 20 rides like Bertie Bus and Harold’s Helicopter Tours. It’s very “hands-on” and magical for fans of the show.
• Teenagers: While there are fewer “mega-thrills” than other parks, rides like The Wave (a newly reimagined coaster), Shockwave (a stand-up coaster), and Thor usually keep them from getting bored.
• Parents: It’s a bit of a mix. While Thomas Land requires close supervision, the layout is compact enough that you aren’t walking miles between attractions. The Zoo provides a much-needed slower pace and a “break” from the noise of the rides.

Main Attractions and Restrictions

• Thomas Land: Most rides have no minimum height if an adult tags along, but children usually need to be over 1.05m to ride many things alone.
• The Zoo: A 15-acre space home to over 500 animals, including red pandas, meerkats, and tigers. It’s more of an “interesting” experience than a “thrill” one, perfect for a mid-day stroll.
• Thrill Rides:
  • The Wave: Minimum height 1.2m.
  • Shockwave: Minimum height 1.4m.
  • Stormforce 10: A three-drop water ride (you will get soaked). Minimum height 1.3m.
  • Gold Rush: A newer family coaster with a minimum height of 1.0m (if accompanied).

• Average Stay: Most visitors spend 6 to 7 hours here. If you want to do the zoo properly and hit every ride in Thomas Land, you might even find one day a bit of a squeeze.

  • Pre-booking: Buying in advance online is significantly cheaper than turning up at the gate.

Safety and Supervision

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. In Thomas Land, it is very “hands-on,” and you’ll need to be right there with them. For the bigger rides, once they meet the height requirement, teenagers can generally roam in their own groups while you find a coffee at one of the on-site cafes.
