Oxford Castle & Prison

Oxford Castle & Prison is a 1,000-year-old historic site that has served as a royal castle, a centre of justice, and a working prison until as recently as 1996. Located in the heart of Oxford city centre, it offers a dramatic alternative to the city’s university-focused history, detailing the lives of kings, sheriffs, and common criminals.

What You Can Do
Visitors primarily explore the site through costumed guided tours (lasting about 50–60 minutes) followed by self-guided exploration.
Climb St George’s Tower: Scale 101 steep, uneven steps for 360-degree panoramic views of Oxford’s “dreaming spires”.
Descend into the Crypt: Visit the 900-year-old candle-lit Norman crypt, the only surviving part of St George’s Chapel.
Explore the Prison: Walk through the 18th-century Debtors’ Tower and the austere Victorian D-Wing.
Ascend the Mound: Climb the 11th-century motte-and-bailey castle mound to see the vaulted well chamber.
Special Activities: Participate in a Jailbreak Escape Room (daily from 7pm) or seasonal Ghost Tours.

Who Should Go & When
Who: Families, history enthusiasts, and fans of the paranormal. It is recommended for children aged 5+, as those under 5 are not permitted to climb the tower for safety reasons.
When: The attraction is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
Peak Times: Saturdays are usually the busiest; Monday to Thursday mornings are generally quieter.
Best Season: May through September offers the best weather for outdoor parts like the Mound, while December to February provides a moody, atmospheric setting for ghost tours.

Unique Features
Continuous Use: It is one of the few sites in the UK that functioned as a prison for nearly 900 years, closing only in 1996.
Defensive Design: The tower stairs were intentionally built with uneven heights to trip up invaders.
Non-University History: It focuses on Oxford’s “darker” past—crime, punishment, and everyday residents—rather than its academic history.
