Bosworth Battlefield is where the course of English history turned. Here, on 22 August 1485, King Richard III charged to his death, the Wars of the Roses reached their climax, and Henry Tudor picked the crown of England from the field — the last English king to die in battle, and the first of the Tudors, in one extraordinary morning. The award-winning Heritage Centre in the Leicestershire countryside tells the story brilliantly, right beside the ground where it happened.
The Exhibition
The interactive galleries walk you through medieval England and the brutal reality of the battle through the eyes of four people who lived it — an archer, a mercenary’s wife, a child and the fence-sitting Lord Stanley, whose last-minute treachery decided the day. There’s plenty of armour to try and weaponry to heft, making it a genuine hit with children, and your ticket cleverly gives free return visits for a whole year.
Walking the Battlefield
Outside, a free two-kilometre battlefield trail loops through the country park with standards flying and views across the landscape where the armies clashed — modern archaeology, including the discovery of the silver-gilt boar badge that likely marks where Richard fell, has rewritten the story in recent years. Guided walks with the centre’s superb battlefield guides run every weekend and bring it all vividly to life, while August’s Medieval Festival stages full-scale re-enactments of the battle itself.
Visiting Bosworth Battlefield
The Heritage Centre is at Sutton Cheney near Market Bosworth, west of Leicester (pay-and-display parking; the 1485 Tithe Barn café does a fine lunch). It’s open daily year-round, with last entry an hour before closing. The essential companion visit is the King Richard III Visitor Centre in Leicester, where the king’s remarkable 2012 rediscovery under a car park is told and his tomb lies in the cathedral opposite — a joint ticket covering both is available, and together they complete one of history’s greatest detective stories.
