Rutland Farm Park

Located in Oakham, Rutland, this is a proper working family farm that feels much more authentic and “hands-on” than those massive, commercialised farm parks. It’s right on the edge of the town centre, so it’s incredibly easy to find.

What to Expect
It’s a charming, traditional setup where you can wander through paddocks and barns. You’ll meet a big variety of rare breed animals including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, donkeys, and some very friendly alpacas. The guinea pig village and the poultry areas are usually a hit for the smaller kids.

Age Groups & Vibe

  • Toddlers & Young Children: This is their paradise. It’s small enough that they won’t get exhausted but interactive enough to keep them buzzing.
  • Teens: Unless they are aspiring farmers or love an animal selfie, they might find it a bit low-octane and get restless fairly quickly.
  • Adults: It’s a lovely, nostalgic stroll if you enjoy heritage breeds and a slower pace.

Parent Perspective
The playground is a decent wooden structure that lets kids burn off steam while you grab a coffee, but because it’s a working farm with open pens and animals, you’ll need to keep a reasonably close eye on the littlest ones. It’s more of an “explore together” place than a “drop and forget” zone.

Planning Your Time
Most families spend about 2 to 3 hours here. It’s not a full-day epic, but it’s a very high-quality half-day.

Money Matters

  • Discounts: They usually offer reduced rates for seniors and children under a certain age (toddlers often get in for a very small fee).
  • Memberships: If you live locally, the annual pass is a total winner because it pays for itself in just a few visits.
  • Food & Parking: There is a lovely tea room on-site for cakes and light lunches. Parking is available and generally straightforward.

Nearby Extras
Since it’s in Oakham, you are a short walk from the town’s independent shops and cafes. If you want to make a full day of it, combine the farm with a trip to Rutland Water (just a few minutes’ drive away) for a walk or a look at the massive reservoir. Oakham Castle, with its famous wall of giant horseshoes, is also right around the corner and worth a quick “I’ve seen it” visit.
