Rutland Water Watersports Centre

This is a massive hub for anyone who loves being on or near the water. It’s not just a place to look at the lake; it’s where you go to actually get in it. You can try your hand at sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. If you aren’t feeling particularly athletic, you can hire a rowing boat or a small motorboat for a more relaxed potter around the creek.

Who will love it?

  • Teens and Adults: This is their playground. It’s high-energy and perfect for those who want a challenge.
  • Younger Kids: They can join in on double kayaks or canoes with parents, but they’ll need constant, close supervision near the water and on the docks.
  • Families: It’s a genuine “whole family” spot if you enjoy being active together. However, if your kids aren’t fans of getting wet or don’t have the stamina for paddling, they might get restless.

The Vibe

It’s definitely more “hands-on” than just a site-seeing trip. You’ll likely spend 3 to 4 hours here if you’re doing a session, or even a full day if you pack a picnic and combine it with other shore-side activities. It’s not a place where parents can just “switch off” and leave the kids to it; you’ll either be in the water with them or watching closely from the bank.

Money Matters

Keep an eye out for off-peak discounts or group rates if you’re bringing a crowd. They usually offer lower rates for children and sometimes have deals for Blue Light card holders. If you live nearby and plan to be a regular, look into their seasonal memberships or “multi-pack” hire sessions which can save a lot over the summer.

Logistics & Food

  • Parking: There is a large car park at Whitwell, but it’s pay-and-display and can get pricey if you stay all day.
  • Food: There is an on-site café for quick snacks and coffee, but for a proper meal, the Harbour Bar and Kitchen is right there. It’s a great spot to grab a burger or a drink while watching the boats.
  • Nearby: You are right next to the Rutland Cycling giant store, the climbing wall, and the Rutland Belle cruise boat. You could easily spend the morning on a paddleboard and the afternoon cycling the perimeter of the lake.

For the Walkers & Cyclists

The centre sits directly on the main 23-mile circular track that goes all the way around the reservoir.

  • The Route: It’s a wide, well-surfaced gravel and tarmac path that is mostly off-road, making it safe and easy to navigate.
  • Points of Interest: If you head east from the centre, you’ll reach the massive Dam, which offers incredible views. If you head west, you’ll find the Normanton Church, which looks like it’s floating in the water—it’s the classic “I’ve been to Rutland” photo op.
  • Pit Stops: There are several kiosks and pubs (like the Horse & Jockey in Manton) scattered along the loop, so you’re never too far from a cold drink.
